Brewing Ceylon black tea
-
1. Boil fresh water
Boil fresh water in a kettle or boiling pan until it is boiling hot (hint: bubbles on surface top, 90-100c).
Pro Tip:
Warm is no good! Bring water to rapid simmering to get the best tea taste.
-
2. Steeping wisely
Put 2g (1 tablespoon) of loose black tea leaves in a pot. Pour hot water on top of tea leaves, close the lid, and let it steep for 3-5 mins.
Pro Tips:
- Use no more than 1 tablespoon of black tea leaves to get a balanced taste.
- More steeping mins more strength, but limit to 5 mins at tops!
- Add a small lemon slice or 2-3 mint leaves or 2-3 tulsi leaves in the pot, and let them steep together with tea leaves.
-
3. Pour or ice tea?
- Pour it hot in a tea cup and enjoy the fresh black tea.
- For iced black tea, open the pot lid and let it rest until room temperature.
-
4. I just love it cold
- Open the lid and wait until the pot is down to room temperature.
- Put the pot/cup in fridge and let it rest for at least 2-3 hours.
- After 2-3 hours, pour iced black tea in a glass and add few ice cubes on top.
Enjoy it refreshingly!
-
5. Avoid doing this
- Make sure to boil water until rapid simmering, no more no less.
- 1 tablespoon of loose black tea leaves is all you need, no more.
- Do not steep more than 4-5 mins.
- Add a slice of lemon or 2-3 mint leaves or 2-3 tulsi leaves from Step 2 onwards. Avoid doing so in Step 1 to get a balanced flavored black tea.
- Add honey when you are ready to drink it sweet.

Both green tea and black tea are excellent sources of antioxidants. Consider below points for deciding:
- Caffeine content: green tea contains lower caffeine (20-30mg) comparing to black tea (40-60mg) per 200ml tea cup. If you are caffeine intolerant or wanting to limit caffeine intake, we suggest green tea over black tea.
- Natural antioxidants: green tea is less processed comparing to black tea, preserving higher amounts of natural antioxidants. Green tea is also rich in catechins (EPCG), which are known for their anti-inflammatory properties. Even though black tea is fermented, it helps release natural compounds and tea oils that are health benefitting.
- Health benefits: green tea with low caffeine combined with L-theanine amino acids provides more balanced uplift and energy boost that sustains longer. L-theanine is known to enhance the calming effect which can lead to increased productivity. Black tea is abundant with polyphenols that support digestive health and natural detox. It also provides energy boost without the coffee jitters.
Both green tea and black tea are excellent sources of antioxidants. Depending on your health goals and caffeine tolerance, you may go for one or another. Take your pick with Svamingo!

Black tea can be best enjoyed from mornings till late afternoon. We suggest starting your day with a cup of Svamingo Ceylon black tea to set you up for rest of the day. We won't recommend black tea late in evenings as it contains 40-60mg of caffeine per cup, which may disturb your sleep cycle if you are caffeine intolerant. We also suggest you should avoid drinking tea with your meals (or with 1 hour of meal time) as it may inhibit iron absorption especially from plant-based diets that naturally lack sufficient iron.
Svamingo Ceylon black tea is naturally gentle on stomach and can be enjoyed empty stomach. If you still feel acidic, we recommend drinking it with a small snack or after breakfast.
Black tea contains around 30-50mg of caffeine per 8oz (200ml) tea cup, making it a perfect choice for those wanting energy boost without coffee jitters. Coffee contains 100-200mg of caffeine per 8oz size cup.
