Brewing Kangra Himalayan green tea

  • 1. Boil fresh water

Boil fresh water in a kettle or boiling pan until it is simmering hot (hint: bubbles start to form, 70-80c).

    Pro Tips:

    1. Avoid over boiling water for green tea to preserve the natural smooth taste.
  • 2. Steeping wisely

Put 2g (1 tablespoon) of loose green tea leaves in a pot. Pour hot water on top of tea leaves, close the lid, and let it steep for 2-3 mins.

    Pro Tips:

    1. Use no more than 1 tablespoon of green tea leaves to preserve smooth natural aroma and slight bitterness.
    2. Steep no more than 2-3 mins to preserve natural taste!
    3. Add a small lemon slice or 2-3 mint leaves or 2-3 tulsi leaves in the pot, and let them steep together with tea leaves.
  • 3. Pour or ice tea?

    1. Pour it hot in a tea cup and enjoy the fresh green tea.
    2. For iced green tea, open the pot lid and let it rest until room temperature.
  • 4. I just love it cold

    1. Open the lid and wait until the pot is down to room temperature.
    2. Put the pot/cup in fridge and let it rest for 2-3 hours.
    3. After 2-3 hours, pour iced green tea in a glass and add few ice cubes on top.

    Enjoy it refreshingly!

  • 5. Avoid doing this

    1. Do not boil water more than needed.
    2. 1 tablespoon of green tea leaves is all you need, no more.
    3. Do not steep more than 2-3 mins.
    4. Add a slice of lemon or 2-3 mint leaves or 2-3 tulsi leaves from Step 2 onwards. Avoid doing so in Step 1 to get more balanced flavored green tea.
    5. Add honey when you are ready to drink it sweet.

Frequently Asked Questions

The history of Kangra tea dates back to 1849 when Dr. Jameson, then superintendent of the Botanical Tea Gardens, pronounced  the region ideal for tea cultivation. Kangra tea, grown in the Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh, is known for its unique flavor, aroma, and color, and is a registered Geographical Indication (GI). It is characterized by a subtle sweetness, floral notes, and a light body, setting it apart from other tea varieties like Darjeeling or Assam.

The climate, terrain, and soil conditions, combined with the chill of the snow-draped mountains in Himachal’s famous Kangra region, all influence the production of a wonderfully distinctive cup of tea. Particularly, the first flush offers a fruity aroma and flavor profile.

Being one of India’s smallest tea regions makes Kangra green and black tea all the more exclusive. While the black tea has a sweet lingering after taste, the green tea has a delicate woody aroma.

Both green tea and black tea are excellent sources of antioxidants. Consider below points for deciding:

  1. Caffeine content: green tea contains lower caffeine (20-30mg) comparing to black tea (40-60mg) per 200ml tea cup. If you are caffeine intolerant or wanting to limit caffeine intake, we suggest green tea over black tea.
  2. Natural antioxidants: green tea is less processed comparing to black tea, preserving higher amounts of natural antioxidants. Green tea is also rich in catechins (EPCG), which are known for their anti-inflammatory properties. Even though black tea is fermented, it helps release natural compounds and tea oils that are health benefitting.
  3. Health benefits: green tea with low caffeine combined with L-theanine amino acids provides more balanced uplift and energy boost that sustains longer. L-theanine is known to enhance the calming effect which can lead to increased productivity. Black tea is abundant with polyphenols that support digestive health and natural detox. It also provides energy boost without the coffee jitters.

Both green tea and black tea are excellent sources of antioxidants. Depending on your health goals and caffeine tolerance, you may go for one or another. Take your pick with Svamingo!
